An adult and two baby elephants died on Monday morning at Rajabhat Khawa in West Bengal’s Alipurduar district after they were hit by a goods train.
Video footage showed one of the elephants on the side of the track with multiple cuts on its body.
The mother and two babies were crossing a section of the track not covered by an Intrusion Detection System, which is meant to avert such collisions.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed distress over the deaths.
“Thirteen years ago, a similar tragedy occurred, and seven elephants were killed,” he said. “I visited the area and preventive measures were put in place by the railways and the state government. It is time for a serious review. Most importantly, elephant corridors need to be protected.”
