Puffed rice upuma


This is an easy breakfast or dinner recipe made with puffed rice, spices, peanuts, onions and carrots. It is a popular dish in the South Indian state of Karnataka and is also a street food. It is mostly eaten with mirchi bajji (chilli fried fritters).

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Serves: 2

Ingredients: Pori or murmura (puffed rice): 2 cups Onion: 1 Green chilli: 1 Mustard seeds: ¼ tsp Peanuts: 2 tbsp Carrot: ½ Frozen peas: 2 tbsp Lemon juice: 2 tsp Salt: As needed Turmeric powder: ¼ tsp Red chilli powder: ¼ tsp Coriander leaves: Few

Method: 1) Take a wide bowl and put in the pori. Wash it in running water and drain the excess water immediately. 2) Finely chop the onion and cut the carrot. 3) Take a pan and add oil, the mustard seeds and green chilli. Add the peanuts and cook for two minutes. Add the finely chopped onion and a little salt. Cook till the onion turns translucent. 4) Add the carrot and green peas and cook for two minutes. 5) Add the red chilli powder, turmeric powder and salt. Saute for a minute and add the washed pori. 6) Mix well and cook for a minute. Add the lemon juice and mix well. 7) Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves.

Pori upuma is ready.

Notes: a) You can add capsicum and cashew nuts. b) Always serve hot.
