Sesame seeds rice

This is a tasty and iron-rich rice dish (“Ellu Sadam” in Tamil) made with roasted sesame seeds and lentils.

It is easy to prepare and ideal for lunch and even festive occasions.

To make the meal more nutritious, serve Ellu Sadam with a bowl of vegetable salad and curd.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 20 minutes
Serves: 1

Ingredients:

¼ cup cooked rice
2 tbsp sesame seeds
1 tbsp urad dal
1-2 red chilli
A pinch of asafoetida
Salt to taste
A few curry leaves
2 tsp sesame oil

Method:

1) Roast the sesame seeds till they are golden brown. Keep aside.
2) Roast the urad dal and red chilli till the dal becomes golden brown. Do this on low flame.
3) When it becomes cool, grind it into a fine powder along with the roasted sesame seeds and asafoetida.
4) Mix this with the cooked rice.
5) Add a tsp of sesame oil and a few curry leaves and mix well.
6) Sesame seeds rice is ready to serve.

Notes:

a) Ensure the rice is cooked properly, and not mashed.
b) You can roast 1 tbsp of peanuts in a little oil and add to the rice.
c) If the sesame seeds are dirty, wash them and drain the water with a cloth. When they become dry, you can roast them.
d) Preferably, use black sesame seeds.
