A woman in Pune killed her husband with punches to his face for not taking her to Dubai to celebrate her birthday.
According to the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency, the couple had a heated argument last Friday, with the wife, Renuka, accusing her husband, Nikhil Khanna, of being indifferent to her wishes.
She had also expected an expensive gift for their anniversary and wanted to travel to Delhi for a relative’s birthday.
The verbal spat at their flat in the upscale Ganga Satellite Housing Society in Wanowrie turned physical, a police officer told PTI.
In a fit of rage, Renuka, 36, struck Mr Nikhil, 38, on his nose, causing profuse bleeding and rendering him unconscious.
Neighbours alerted the police, who rushed Mr Nikhil to Sassoon General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Asian News International reported that Renuka punched Mr Nikhil, a real estate developer, with such force that she broke his nose and some teeth.
The severe bleeding caused Mr Nikhil to lose consciousness.
The police detained the woman and registered a case against her under Indian Penal Code (IPC) 302 (murder).
Senior Inspector Sanjay Patange of the Wanowrie police station told The Times of India that during initial questioning, Renuka revealed that she was unhappy with their married life as her husband did not agree to her holiday plans.
Renuka wanted to celebrate her birthday in Dubai on Sept 18, but her husband declined to fulfil her wish. He also allegedly failed to buy her a gift on their wedding anniversary on Nov 11.
He then avoided discussing her plans to visit Delhi in the first week of December to celebrate the relative’s birthday.
“On Friday, there were heated arguments between the couple, and her husband allegedly attacked her,” said SI Patange.
“As the argument escalated, the accused pushed her husband to the ground and sat on his chest, before punching him on his face four or five times, causing his nose to bleed.”
“It is not clear whether the accused used her hand or an object to strike Nikhil. We are questioning Renuka to find out if there was any other motive.”
The autopsy shows Mr Nikhil died of head trauma.
A magisterial court on Saturday sent Renuka to custodial remand till Nov 28.
