Even as life took her on an unplanned path, 28-year-old Rajappan Karthikeyan Preethi is determined to realise her long-held dream of becoming an architect.
Born in 1996 in India, Preethi moved to Singapore with his parents when she was four months old. She studied in Singapore till Junior College. Later, she and her younger sister continued their studies in India as per their parents’ wishes. Preethi, who wanted to study Architecture at Anna University, Chennai, could only enrol in the Civil Engineering department. At that time, Anna University had stopped foreign student intake for the Architecture course.
Although not very keen on Civil Engineering, Preethi decided to pursue the course due to her father’s advice and some similarities between both fields.
After completing her undergraduate studies, Preethi returned to Singapore and was nudged by her parents to get married.
“My parents told me to either get a job or get married,” said Preethi.
Despite her desire to work in the architecture field, she could not secure a job as she did not pursue her studies in that field. To appease her parents and with their consent, she decided to pursue her Post-Graduate studies in Civil Engineering at the National University of Singapore in 2021.
However, Preethi’s passion for Architecture continued unabated and she enrolled for an introductory Architecture course in Chicago. The one-month course reinforced Preethi’s interest in Architecture.
Upon completing this course, she started working as an engineer with Samsung Singapore when she came to know about the Global Korea Scholarship programme.
With only two weeks to apply, Preethi was in a dilemma. “As the eldest in the family, questions arose such as if I was going to be away from the family for several years. But I was determined to pursue my dream,” she said.
Preethi was the only Indian among the seven candidates selected from Singapore to study under the programme.
“I could not believe it when I came to know. My parents were initially shocked too, but later they gave their full support after seeing my determination,” said Preethi.
With dreams in her eyes, Preethi went to South Korea and faced quite a few challenges. She failed the Korean language proficiency test twice. With determination, she tried for the third time, and this time, she passed.
Preethi will be starting her Master’s in Architecture at Sungkyunkwan University this September.
“Everyone sets a certain deadline to achieve some goal in their lives. I have often regretted thinking that I did not do it. But I have come to realise that everyone’s journeys are different and if we try with confidence, we can definitely achieve our goals one day,” said Preethi.
Preethi hopes that his parents’ support will continue to give him strength.

அந்தப் பயிற்சியை முடித்துவிட்டு சிங்கப்பூர் சாம்சுங் நிறுவனத்தில் பொறியாளராகப் பணிபுரியத் தொடங்கியபோது அனைத்துலக கொரிய உபகாரச்சம்பளத் திட்டம் பற்றி ப்ரீத்திக்குத் தெரியவந்தது.
விண்ணப்பிக்க இரண்டு வாரங்களே இருந்த நிலையில் அவருக்குள் பல குழப்பங்கள்.
“குடும்பத்தில் மூத்த பெண். குடும்பத்தை விட்டுப் பல ஆண்டுகள் தொலைவில் இருக்க நேரிடும் என்பது போன்ற பல கேள்விகள், இருந்தாலும் என் கனவை நனவாக்க நான் முடிவு செய்தேன்,” என்றார் அவர்.
அந்தத் திட்டத்தில் சேர்ந்து படிப்பதற்குச் சிங்கப்பூரிலிருந்து தேர்வான எழுவரில் ஒரே இந்தியர் ப்ரீத்தி.
“என் பெற்றோருக்கு முதலில் அதிர்ச்சியாக இருந்தபோதும் எனது உறுதியைக் கண்டு தங்களது முழு ஆதரவை அளித்தனர்,” என்று ப்ரீத்தி கூறினார்.
தென்கொரியாவிற்குச் சென்ற ப்ரீத்தி, கொரிய மொழிப் புலமைத் தேர்வில் மூன்றாவது முறை தேறினார். வரும் செப்டம்பர் மாதம் சொங்கியுங்குவான் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் கட்டடக்கலையில் முதுகலை படிப்பை ப்ரீத்தி தொடங்கவிருக்கிறார்.
வெளிநாட்டில் படிக்கும் அரிய வாய்ப்பைப் பெற்றுள்ள நிலையில், ஒரு புதிய கலாசாரத்தைப் பற்றிக் கற்றுக்கொள்ள இத்திட்டம் கைகொடுக்கும் என்று சொன்னார்.
“இங்கு வந்த பிறகு கொரிய, தமிழ் கலாசாரங்களிடையே சில ஒற்றுமைகள் இருப்பதைக்கூட நான் கவனித்திருக்கிறேன். உதாரணத்திற்கு, தமிழர்களுக்கு ஊறுகாய் இருப்பது போல கொரிய மக்களுக்கு கிம்ச்சி,” என்று குறிப்பிட்டார் ப்ரீத்தி.
படிப்பை முடித்துவிட்டு சிங்கப்பூர் திரும்பிக் கட்டடக்கலைத் துறையில் பணிபுரியத் திட்டமிட்டுள்ளார்.
“எல்லோரும் தங்கள் வாழ்வின் குறிக்கோளை அடைய ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட காலக்கெடுவை வகுத்துக்கொள்வர். நான் அதைச் செய்யவில்லையே என்று பலமுறை நினைத்து வருந்தியுள்ளேன். ஆனால், அனைவரின் பயணங்களும் ஒரே மாதிரியாக இருக்காது. தன்னம்பிக்கையோடு முயற்சி செய்தால் நம்முடைய இலக்குகளைக் கண்டிப்பாக ஒருநாள் அடையலாம்,” என்றார் ப்ரீத்தி.
பெற்றோரின் ஆதரவும் தமக்கு வலுசேர்க்கும் என்ற நம்பிக்கையில் உள்ளார் ப்ரீத்தி.
