The Government is set to provide various assistance to tackle the rising public transport Fare Hike from Dec 28. The Ministry of Transport (MOT) People's Association (PA) has announced this. Last year, a family with a monthly income of up to $1,600 was given a Public Transport Voucher of $50. This year $10 more is given. The Government will issue a $60 Public Transport Voucher to each family with income up to $1,800 a month. The higher income eligibility criteria for the vouchers will benefit an extra 60,000 households. The vouchers can be used to top up fare cards or buy monthly passes and will be given out in two stages. Households that received a voucher in the 2023 exercise and continue to qualify will receive a voucher automatically. They will be notified by the end of December. It has been announced that students who are due to graduate can travel to the public transport Concession Fare for another 4 months after their graduation. They can get this concession extension from the 28th of December when the public transport Fare Hike is in effect. The Public Transport Council said that nearly 75,000 students from secondary schools, Junior College, Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and Polytechnic will benefit every year. For students who migrate to subsequent stages of education, such as joining Institute of Technical Education (ITE) or polytechnics from secondary school, they will also be able to do so. It also noted that the move will help families. Students who are on the Concession Fare eligibility threshold for the period from Dec 28 or later will be granted this four-month concession extension. Concession extensions will apply to students who are between the two phases of education or moving from Junior College to university. The current level is that students who move from secondary school to Junior College, Polytechnic or the Institute of Technical Education should pay adult travel fees.
