Kalaignar Book launch in Singapore; Kanimozhi delivers speech
Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and hailed as Muthamizh Arignar (Great Tamil Scholar), the late Dr. Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi visited Singapore only once in 1999. A book that documents various information about that visit such as news reports, editorials, photos, and speeches delivered, as well as meetings held, will be published in Singapore.
This book, titled ‘Singaporeil Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar’ (Great Tamil Scholar, Kalaignar in Singapore) has been authored and compiled by M. Ilyas, who is also the editor of the ‘Semmozhi’ quarterly literary journal and secretary of the Tamilavel Welfare Association. The book will be released at the Umar Pulavar Tamil Language Centre on Sunday, 1st September 2019.
Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, his daughter, who was working in Singapore for the Tamil Murasu daily newspaper during Kalaignar’s visit, will grace the occasion and unveil the book, besides delivering a special address. An MP from the Thoothukudi constituency in India, Kanimozhi will share her observations of her father’s visit.
Presided over by Mr R. Rajaram, chairman of the Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) and advisor to the Tamil Language Council, the event will have Dr Wan Rizal, MP for Jalan Besar GRC, Ms K. Thanaletchimi, president of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), and Mr R. Anbarasu, CEO of the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) as special guests.
Chithira Duraisamy, a senior grassroots leader who was working as a journalist for Tamil Murasu during that visit and is now an Associate Director at the Institute of South Asian Studies, National University of Singapore, will share her experiences. A. Vishnuvardhini, a student from the National University of Singapore, will present a book review.
Speeches will be delivered by Tamil Murasu editor T. Rajasekar, former president of the Singapore Tamil Teachers’ Union and president of the World Tamil Teachers’ Union, C. Samikannu, and poet laureate Puthumaiththeni Ma. Anbazhagan.
This event, which will be attended by several community leaders including former Ambassador Kesavapany and Tamil scholar Su. Thinnappan, is open to the public free of charge.
The proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to community and charity causes, as a tribute to the late Muthamizh Arignar Kalaignar, said Ilyas, the author of the book.
Organised by Semmozhi, the event will commence with light refreshments at 9.30am. The programme will be held from 10am to 12pm.
Having accepted the invitation of Brigadier-General (BG) George Yeo, who was Minister for Communications & the Arts and Second Minister for Trade & Industry at that time, then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr Karunanidhi had meetings with several political leaders during his three-day visit, including then Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong. He also delivered an address at a Tamil literary event held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, which was attended by tens of thousands of people.

செம்மொழியின் ஏற்பாட்டில் நடைபெறும் இந்த நிகழ்ச்சி காலை 9.30 மணிக்கு சிற்றுண்டியுடன் தொடங்கும். காலை 10 மணி முதல் நண்பகல் 12 மணி வரை நிகழ்ச்சி நடைபெறும்.
